Gigi went mountain biking! What a good girl - she stayed on the trail and ran, and ran, and ran until she was soooo tired. She slept the rest of the weekend away in her favorite camping chair.

Coonies On The Go

This Walker coonhound was spotted on 55th Street in Boulder. Often times you see a coonie and your like - "Is that a coonie?" - and when in fact, it turns out to be one, your like--Yes! I guess this excitement comes with being a coonies person. Because of course, that affords you the insight to the goofy and endearing behavior that only a coonie could deliver. I had the opportunity to see this traveling coonie this morning because of a power outage at work as a nice group of us went out for breakfast. Don't even get me started how great that is...

Another Walker Coonhound

Last Sunday, Gigi and her people saw another Walker Coonhound named Goofy, a beautiful 8 year old female. Yet again this proved that Gigi is a bit bigger than the average coonie. We love to see all you coonies out there though and based on Goofy's name, we can say that this also helps to prove that Walker coonhounds really are silly little critters. This chance encounter was at the Berkley dog park at I-70 and Sheridan in Denver.

Someone recently commented to me that it was ridiculous that we have a blog for our dog. I don't think so... Gigi and her brother from a different mother, Gibson, are a huge part of our lives and we are just sharing what occurs from day to day... and hoping others enjoy it or share their stories and pics with us.

While we don't have human children at this time, I hope that when we do our dogs are still important to us. I just hate seeing families that abandon their dogs when they have a baby. Why should you get rid of your dog? Because children are more important because they're human? Well, my response is that all creatures (all God's creatures - if you need that justification) are important and we all know that dogs experience pain, both physical and emotional. However, let's just hope that all those unwanted pets find a home as great as our Gigi did with us!

Gigi was the poster girl of the biweekly invite to Kim's school's industrial design student meeting. Isn't she lovely with safety glasses? She is working hard to become the group mascot. Gigi is very motivated to be involved in whatever activities she can!

Coonhound Stories

Lots of folks have been offering up their coonhound stories. I'd like to share a few...

A gentleman from Oklahoma told me about his Dad who had coonhounds (Walkers and Redbones). The boys would get together for a night of "hunting" which involved drinking around a campfire, talking, and listening to the hounds chasing coons. There was no actual hunting done by the men, just the dogs. Part of the enjoyment was listening to the hounds calling and identifying which dog was which by the sound of their voice... "Yep, there's Ol' Red." or "Uh huh, that's Ginger".

At the Cider Days at Belmar this past weekend, a man came up to Gigi and knew immediately that she is a treeing walker coonhound as he grew up with them. As his story was told, he used to hunt coons with a native american kid whose family bred coonhounds and fighting chickens in upstate New York in the 1960s. They would take the dogs out to hunt coons. So the dogs would tree the coon and the hunters would put on their track shoes to chase the sounds of the dogs when they treed to coon. They would shoot the coon out of the tree and the dogs would go wild over the carcass - a big bloody affair apparently. And the biggest question: What does racoon taste like? Pork.

Giardia

Poor Gigi and Gibson! They contracted Giardia whilst camping a couple weekends ago. Gibson layed some D all over the white carpet (ruined), while Gigi luckily made it to the vet in time to save her (and us) that misery.

And by the way, Gigi is a good camper. However, she got pretty jealous of a couple stray beagles that invaded our campsite on Saturday night (Sadie and Tucker). When Tucker sat in my lap, Gigi went and pouted - until I put Tucker down - then Gigi came right over and climbed in my lap as if she didn't weigh 70 lbs.! Crazy coonhound.

Gigi's Graduation Day!

On Friday, September 1st, Gigi will graduate from her Beginner Dog Training Class at Blue Springs and Katydid Dog Training Center. Check 'em out - http://www.bskddogtraining.com/ - a great place!

She now is a master of sit, down, stay, recall, stand, and eating lots of treats! Her favorite dog is a corgy - Leo, and Leo just is in love with pretty Gigi!

The House Rules or the Hound Rules?

THE HOUND RULES!
1. The hound is not allowed in the house.
2. OK, the hound is allowed in the house, but only in certain rooms.
3. The hound is allowed in all rooms, but has to stay off the furniture.
4. The hound can get on the old furniture only.
5. Fine, the hound is allowed on all the furniture, but is not allowed to sleep with the humans on the bed.
6. OK, the hound is allowed on the bed, but only by invitation.
7. The hound can sleep on the bed whenever he wants, but not under the covers.
8. The hound can sleep under the covers by invitation only.
9. The hound can sleep under the covers every night.
10. Humans must ask permission to sleep under the covers with the hound.

We started at #3 when we got Gigi in July. We are now at #9 working towards #10!
